Future Tech: Parking and AI

Technology innovation and change is happening globally and impacting every industry in their own unique ways. Of course, parking is no exception. There are many different types of new technologies that have already transformed different parts of our lives and our experiences, and they will soon be coming to parking.

In the coming weeks, we will highlight some of these groundbreaking technologies and how they may (or already have) impacted the parking experience. The first example is Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) enables computing machines to learn from data and experience. Once machines are trained, they can make decisions and predict future outcomes, and continue to get more intelligent as they process more data. So how will this technology impact parking?

We already have the technology to provide individuals with real-time parking availability information. Smartphone users can open their mobile apps to see where parking is available and help them navigate to an open space. LPR cameras already use AI to recognize license plates, along with sensor-based technologies aiding the automation of garage operations. In addition, Of course, AI has already been used to understand customer behavior patterns for effective marketing and customer service.

In the future, AI will likely continue to enhance the parking experience. For example, AI integrated directly into connected vehicles may provide more in-depth information and even “think” for the driver. Opportunities include identifying and avoiding traffic issues, anticipating human behavior, and collecting data to understand future parking patterns.
